• Action Profile: It provides a steady, "peakless" glucose-lowering effect that lasts for approximately 24 hours (up to 36 hours for the concentrated U-300 formula), allowing for once-daily injection.
• Indication: It is used in adults and children (age restrictions may vary by specific brand/concentration) with type 1 diabetes and adults with type 2 diabetes. For type 1 diabetes, it must be used in combination with a short- or rapid-acting insulin before meals.
• Administration: It is administered via subcutaneous (under the skin) injection using a vial and syringe or a pre-filled pen (e.g., Lantus SoloStar, Toujeo, Basaglar, Semglee). Injection sites should be rotated within the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm to prevent skin problems like lumps or thickening.
• Appearance: The solution should be clear and colorless. It should not be used if it is cloudy, colored, or contains particles.
• Limitations: It should not be diluted or mixed with any other type of insulin or solution in the same syringe, as this alters its unique absorption profile. It is not used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires short-acting insulin.
